Havana, April 16 (Prensa Latina) Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez today expressed his country’s willingness to continue strengthening cooperation ties with South Africa in various areas.
According to the foreign minister’s report in X, this willingness was expressed during a meeting with the South African Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, and president of the South African Communist Party, Blade Nzimande, who is on an official visit to the Caribbean country.
Cuba and South Africa established diplomatic relations on May 11, 1994, constituting the first foreign policy act of the democratic South African government.
In March, Cuba’s top diplomat and South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Ozzy Lamola, reaffirmed their shared interest in expanding and diversifying their economic, trade, and cooperation ties in Pretoria.
According to the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the meeting reaffirmed the two nations’ stance in defense of the causes and interests of the people, especially those of the nations of the South.
Camagüey, Cuba, April 15 (Prensa Latina) Peruvian Ambassador to Cuba Gonzalo Guillén made a working visit here today, as part of efforts by both peoples and governments to strengthen cultural ties and advance the decolonization of their national identities.
The diplomatic agenda included two important art exhibitions. The first, “Iconography,” by Felipe Guamán Poma de Ayala in his New Chronicle and Good Government, opened this Monday, April 14, at the Fidelio Ponce Gallery.
The exhibition presents a selection of prints that reinterpret the work of the 17th-century Peruvian indigenous chronicler, a symbol of cultural resistance.
Also today at the Heritage Interpretation Center, the opening of Urban Virgins, an exhibition by renowned Peruvian artist Ana De Orbegoso, took place.
The 13 works that make up the exhibition are the result of a collaboration between the Peruvian Embassy in Cuba and the Network of Cuban Heritage Cities, and are part of an artistic project that has toured more than 20 locations in Peru since 2006.
De Orbegoso, an interdisciplinary artist based in New York and Lima, explores Latin American identity through techniques such as photography, video, sculpture, and painting.
Urban Virgins reinterprets colonial religious iconography, fusing Catholic representations with Indigenous and mestizo traits in a symbolic act of cultural decolonization.
During the inauguration, Ambassador Guillén highlighted the importance of these initiatives: “Culture unites people. This type of dialogue, like the one we have today through art, allows us to recognize our shared histories and the struggles to preserve our identities.”
The Peruvian diplomat also visited Camagüey’s House of Cultural Diversity, where he learned firsthand about the region’s rich multicultural heritage, influenced by African, Hispanic, Arab, and Jewish roots. Local experts explained how this fusion has shaped Camagüey’s traditions, from music to religious expressions.
“In Peru, as in Cuba, the arrival of the Spanish brought a process of cultural imposition, but also of resistance and syncretism,” Guillén reflected.
“The virgins we see in these works today are not the same ones that arrived with the colonizers; they have been transformed by local beliefs, acquiring new meanings.”
The Urban Virgins exhibition is part of a broader strategy to revalue popular art and ancestral memories. According to De Orbegoso, her work seeks to “spark recognition and critical analysis of our culture, showing how the sacred and the everyday are intertwined in Latin America.”
This visit is part of the activities following the Pride of Being Cuban Colloquium, held last weekend, which promotes the reaffirmation of indigenous identities in the face of the vestiges of colonialism.
With traditional music and an exchange between artists and diplomats, the day concluded with a clear message: art remains an essential tool in the struggle for cultural sovereignty of the Latin American peoples.

oscow, April 15 (Prensa Latina) The opening today of the exhibition “Year of Anniversaries: From Mexico to Argentina” marked the culmination of the celebrations marking the anniversaries of Russia’s diplomatic relations with several Latin American nations.
The director of the Latin American Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Eurasian giant, Alexander Shchetinin, in statements to Prensa Latina acknowledged that the commemoration of ties with a dozen countries in the Latin American region in 2025 gives his nation the opportunity to defend so many years of shared history.
“The diplomatic relations of some of the countries we are celebrating with this year date back to the 19th century, such as Brazil, Argentina, and Mexico. Others are more recent, for example, Honduras, with whom we have 35 years, but most of the nations represented here have ties that go back 80 years,” the diplomat said.
Alexander Shchetinin drew a parallel with the coincidence of the anniversaries falling in 1945, and with the victory of the Red Army in World War II, the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945) for Russia.
That is why we note with great satisfaction that the vast majority of Latin American countries were on board the anti-Nazi coalition. And thus, they contributed to the common fight against Nazi-fascism through their military detachments and solidarity movements with the Soviet people, he recalled.
“For us, Latin America is a great partner, a partner that shares our values, such as equality among states, sovereignty, and non-intervention in foreign and domestic affairs. That is why we will continue to expand cooperation and friendship, in a joint journey toward a better future,” the official emphasized.
For his part, Enrique Orta, Cuba’s deputy head of mission in Russia, described the 65 years of ties between Havana and Moscow as a fruitful period marked by multilateral ties of full understanding between the two countries.
In this regard, he noted that it is an honor for the Caribbean nation that this celebration takes place on the eve of the commemoration of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany.
“And although these dates may not seem directly connected historically, they do. Three Cubans fought in the Great Patriotic War, and three Russians were part of the Liberation Army fighting in Cuba, actions that made our ties even more historic,” the ambassador recalled.
Along these lines, he emphasized that the historic milestone of celebrating 65 years of diplomatic relations on May 8, followed by the 80th anniversary of the victory over fascism, adds further depth to Russian-Cuban ties.
The exhibition “Year of Anniversaries: From Mexico to Argentina,” opened by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, and displays copies of documents from Russia’s foreign policy archives that reveal the process of establishing diplomatic relations with Argentina (140 years); Mexico (135); Colombia (90); Bolivia, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, and Ecuador, 80 years with each country, respectively; Honduras (35); and the 65th anniversary of the reestablishment of bilateral ties with Cuba.

Havana, April 13 (Prensa Latina) Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez reiterated today the Caribbean country’s support for the Bolivarian and Chavista Revolution, its Civic-Military Union, and President Nicolás Maduro, in the face of external threats and sanctions.
This was stated by the highest representative of Cuban diplomacy in X, on the occasion of the 23rd anniversary of the defeat of the fascist coup d’état by the people of Venezuela and Commander Hugo Chávez (1954-2013).
On April 11, 2002, the Venezuelan right launched a coup attempt against Chávez, following a brutal media campaign aimed at tarnishing the Bolivarian leader and the progressive ideals he represented.
The leadership of the business association Fedecámaras and the private media, in complicity with sectors of the opposition and the ecclesiastical hierarchy, conspired with members of the military high command to overthrow the president and place Pedro Carmona as de facto president.
The coup was pre-planned with a massacre of the Venezuelan people in the streets near the Miraflores Palace (the headquarters of the Executive Branch), using snipers, in order to hold the Chávez government responsible.
Hugo Chávez remained kidnapped by the plotting forces until his rescue on April 13 by military personnel loyal to the constitutional order, who, along with the popular uprising in the streets, thwarted the coup d’état.
