China and Cuba highlight life-changing role of women in society

Beijing, Mar 8 (Prensa Latina) Women from socioeconomic sectors of China and Cuban diplomatic corps accredited here highlighted the life-changing role of women in societies, on the occasion of International Women’s Day.

During the activity, the Cuban ambassador to China, Alberto Blanco, quoted the island’s Apostle José Martí, recognizing the role of women as workers, wives, and mothers. “Women are neither a minority nor a complement, they are an indispensable bulwark for the development of society,” he said.

He also highlighted the ability of women to boldly overcome patriarchal stereotypes that still persist and achieve a balance between social and family life.

“In both Cuba and China, we can appreciate the will to continue enhancing the role of women in society, as equality between men and women is a basic state policy. Today China is a society that has managed to eradicate extreme poverty, where of the 770 million people who have emerged from poverty, more than half are women,” he added.

Cuba urges industrialized countries to fulfill climate commitments

Havana, Mar 12 (Prensa Latina) Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez urged the industrialized countries on Tuesday to fulfill their financial commitments to the mitigation, adaptation and response to losses and damages due to climate change.

On his X account, the head of Cuban diplomacy pointed out that climate change affects Latin America and the Caribbean more frequently, with extreme phenomena such as droughts, forest fires and hurricanes.

According to statistics from the World Meteorological Organization, there is a 66-percent probability that the average annual near-surface temperature between 2023 and 2027 will exceed pre-industrial levels by more than 1.5 degrees Celsius for at least one year.

In addition, there is a 98-percent chance that at least one of the next five years, and the five-year period as a whole, will be the warmest on record.

According to a study published in the Nature Medicine journal, some four million people might die this year as a result of extreme weather events, the spread of viruses and other consequences from climate change.

The study, which quantifies for the first time the number of deaths that will occur in a year due to the various factors derived from global warming, used the science of attribution to reach these conclusions.

Cuba has warned at several international forums that the inadequate financing and lack of commitment by the developed countries in the face of climate change endanger the survival of humanity and the world.

New ideas strengthen solidarity with Cuba in Costa Rica

San Jose, Mar 11 (Prensa Latina) Bringing young people closer to the life and work of Cuban independence fighter Antonio Maceo (1845-1896) and his passage through this Central American nation is a priority of the Costa Rican Movement for Solidarity with Cuba, its directors announced on Monday.

The residents in the northern city of Nicoya, in Guanacaste province, will have the opportunity to learn about the settlement of Lieutenant General Antonio Maceo and a group of 100 Cuban families in La Mansion for about four years to organize the Necessary War in 1895, aimed to end Spanish colonialism in Cuba.

In a meeting to redirect the organization’s work and increase aid to Cuba, the Solidarity Movement was also set to study the thoughts of Cuban independence fighter José Martí (1853-1895), who visited Costa Rica twice.

To achieve that goal, Milagros Solís of the Yamileth López Bolivarian Circle told Prensa Latina that they will reach out to neighborhoods, the educational sector, universities, trade unions, and the people’s movement.

The idea is to strengthen with their new initiatives the virtual media and communication, in general, to inform about the progress and struggle of the Cuban people against Yankee imperialism.

They will also work and support the campaigns of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP) and the Continental Network of Solidarity with Cuba and fair causes in actions to denounce the economic and commercial blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba, for more than 60 years, which hinders the progress of its society.

The movement’s ten organizations also seek to denounce the US occupation of the Naval Base in Guantanamo, Cuba, and to achieve Cuba’s removal from the list of State Sponsors of Terrorism (SSOT). This sanction, among other consequences, limits Cuba’s financial and economic life with the rest of the world.
