Uruguay’s FA calls to end US interference and blockade against Cuba

Montevideo, Apr 1 (Prensa Latina) Uruguay’s Broad Front (Frente Amplio-FA) rejected what it described as the interference of the United States in Cuba’s internal affairs and the blockade Washington still maintains against that nation.

A statement from the Executive Secretariat of the leftist alliance reiterated its support for the self-determination of peoples and non-interference in their internal affairs.

The FA reiterates its absolute rejection of the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed on Cuba by the United States since 1962, the statement noted.

At the same time, it condemned “Cuba’s inclusion in Washington’s State Sponsors of Terrorism (SSOT) list. Cuba was added to that list by Donald Trump in one of his last administrative acts in 2021.”

The FA noted that the blockade and the list harm Cuba’s access to resources, including food and fuel for thermoelectric power plants.

Under these circumstances, we once again call for ending the US economic blockade, as the international community has overwhelmingly done year after year to the United Nations, and Cuba’s immediate removal from that list, the statement concludes.

One of the outstanding projects is the development of the Cneuro-201 molecule, which has shown a powerful neuroprotective capacity in animal models.

March 30 (teleSUR) Alzheimer’s disease (AD) has become a global health challenge due to its devastating impact on quality of life and the growing number of people affected. Describing advances in the fight against this disease, Cuban and Mexican researchers are collaborating on innovative projects to develop treatments and methods of early diagnosis.

In Cuba, studies led by Doctor of Medical Sciences Juan Libre Rodríguez have estimated that about 10.2% of the population over 65 years suffers from dementia, with Alzheimer’s being the main cause. This means that approximately 160,000 people are living with this disease in Cuba today, a figure that is expected to rise to about 273,000 by 2040.

Mitchell Valdés Sosa, Director General of the Center for Neurosciences of Cuba (Cneuro), noted that although the causes of AS are not yet known with certainty, the researchers continue to focus their efforts on developing effective treatments and methods of early diagnosis.

One of the outstanding projects is the development of the Cneuro-201 molecule, which has shown a powerful neuroprotective capacity in animal models. This research, carried out in collaboration with Mexican institutions such as the Center for Research and Advanced Studies of the National Polytechnic Institute (Cinvestav) and the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), has favorable prospects for Alzheimer’s treatment.

In addition, studies are being conducted to develop early diagnostic methods using Cuban radiopharmaceuticals, such as Cneuro-120. These efforts also include research into treatments for other related conditions, such as head trauma, using NeuroEpo, a product developed at Cuba’s Molecular Immunology Center (CIM).

Dr. Valdés Sosa emphasized that these joint efforts demonstrate the commitment of Cuban and Mexican researchers in the fight against Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases. Although the road ahead is challenging, hope and conviction in the contribution of these advances to the health of both nations remain strong.

AD, a form of dementia that affects memory and cognitive functions, was first described in 1906 by German neurologist Alois Alzheimer. Today, more than 50 million people worldwide are living with this disease, with the number projected to rise to 80 million by 2030 and 152 million by 2050.

Caravan in Miami against the U.S. blockade on Cuba

Washington, Mar 31 (Prensa Latina) Wherever you are, raise your voice for the Cuban people, this is the call today to participants, on the last Sunday of the month, in the international caravan against the U.S. blockade on Cuba.

The promotion published on social media by activist Carlos Lazo, organizer of the Bridges of Love movement, says:”International caravan this Sunday, March 31, 2024! In Miami! Caravan for the end of the sanctions that are stifling the Cuban family!”.

The coercive measures of the United States, prevent the entry of food and medicines to Cuba, the Cuban-American professor said while recalling that “the blockade seeks to starve and sicken children, the elderly, women and men” on the island.

He also warned that in Cuba here is lack of medicines to treat children with cancer, pacemakers to extend the lives of heart patients and lack of glasses and supplies for those who are going blind and cannot have cataract surgery”. Stifling the Cuban economy causes pain and death, Lazo stressed.

Earlier, in statements to Prensa Latina, the activist said that “on behalf of Bridges of Love, he thanked the Cuban authorities and the competent bodies for having extended the extension for free entry to Cuba, the exemption of tariffs for food and medicines, and hygiene utensils”.

He commented that this is something positive for the Cuban community; positive also for the country, for our land; it is one of the ways in which bridges of love are built between Cuban emigrants and their nation.

Among all Cubans inside and outside the island, we can do a lot to mitigate the effects of the blockade, to fill the gaps, he concluded.

On March 27, the Cuban Official Gazette published the extension of the waiver period for these imports until June 30.

Cuban Embassy in the US celebrates connection with nationals

Washington, Mar 30 (Prensa Latina) The Cuban embassy in the United States hosted a meeting with representatives of several generations of nationals and their descendants, an initiative that seeks today to connect more and more strongly with the roots.

In the group a seven-year-old girl, the youngest, traveled with her parents from Chicago. They, as they told Prensa Latina, were “eager to see other Cubans, to get closer, to relate”.

That is why during the evening they talked about national symbols, Cuban music that has served as a school and is listened to in so many places, the rhythms and the character of Cubans.

Welcoming the guests to the diplomatic headquarters, the head of the Cuban Mission, Lianys Torres, recalled the negative effects resulting from the country’s inclusion in the list of sponsors of terrorism, which sets more hurdles in the midst of the economic, commercial and financial blockade the US government has enforced for over six decades.

But, above all, Torres conveyed in her words confidence and optimism in the future, and that the hard times will pass.

She also reiterated that one of Embassy’s prime objectives is “to strengthen our relationship with Cubans living abroad and their descendants”.

Paul Cassens, a American musician and lover of Cuban rhythms, enlivened the evening in which he said he would be happy, like many here, to see relations between the U.S. and Cuba improve.

Ecuadorians reaffirm condemnation of U.S. blockade against Cuba

Quito, Mar 28 (Prensa Latina) The Ecuadorian Coordinator of Friendship and Solidarity with Cuba reaffirmed on Thursday its strong rejection of the hostile and unjust U.S. blockade imposed on Cuba and also assured that such a genocidal policy is responsible for most of difficulties faced by the Cuban people.

In a statement Prensa Latina had access to, the solidarity movement referred to the incidents that mobilized a group of Cubans past Sunday, March 17, a day in which a smear campaign was waged to overstate the event and above all its motivations.

That event was an opportunity for the “imperial spokesmen to threaten once again the dignity of the Cuban people”.

The organization ratified “its commitment with the just causes conducted by Cuba, which has given it the title of a reference of dignity for the peoples around the world and in Latin America”.

The Coordinating Committee for Peace, Sovereignty, Integration and Non-interference (CPAZ), which sent a letter to the Cuban ambassador in Ecuador, Basilio Gutiérrez, to express its support to Cuba and its authorities, pronounced itself in similar terms.

CPAZ warned of the “imperialist maneuvers” of those who intend to “to fish in troubled waters, troubled by themselves and deform the perception of reality to distract world opinion and exacerbate situations of local protest, normal in a participatory democracy and even more so in the one we are dealing with, so close to the jaws of the monster”.
