Cuba participates in EU forum on biopharmaceutical industry

Brussels, June 22 (Prensa Latina) The general director of the Finlay Vaccine Institute of Cuba, Vicente Vérez, participated here today in a European Union (EU) forum to promote alliances with Latin America and the Caribbean in the biopharmaceutical industry.

Framed in the EU’s Global Gateway strategy, the meeting attracted academics, representatives of institutions and industry, both from the public and private sectors, and financial entities, with the aim of improving Latin American capacities to produce medicines and vaccines, and diversify global value chains.

According to Vérez, the event addressed the path to connecting academia and vaccine producers in Latin America and the Caribbean with project financing possibilities.

I believe that as a result of the forum, a consensus was reached to work in the coming days on the integration of the various participating actors, in order to enhance the regional production of medicines and vaccines, he told Prensa Latina.

Regarding the Cuban presence, the general director of the Finlay Vaccine Institute considered it important that at the meeting contacts were established with funding sources, some already with experiences of working together and others with perspectives.

We came out connected in our objective of completing the institution’s investment strategy to play the role of something like a regional hub, which contributes to Latin America, the Caribbean and Africa, he explained.

In addition to the Cuban representation, Fiocruz, from the Brazilian Ministry of Health, and VaxThera, from Colombia, participated among other institutions in the Global Gateway strategy event on the biopharmaceutical industry.

Italian students raise their voices to support Cuba

Rome, Jun 22 (Prensa Latina) The Network of High School Students, one of the largest Italian youth groups, on Saturday again raised its voice to support Cuba, and strongly condemned the unilateral measures imposed by the U.S. government.

In the concluding statement of the 5th Congress of the Network of High School Students of Rome, which ended on Friday in Rome, members of that group expressed their full solidarity with Cuba, “by denouncing the despicable actions taken by Western governments, and mainly by the United States” against Cuba.

The statement demands the end of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States on the Cuban people, an action described as “unjust, unacceptable and terrible, and which violates the guarantee of human rights”.

As a guest at the event, representing the Cuban Embassy in Italy, Alejandro Betancourt, third secretary in charge of Press and Cultural Affairs, took part in the event, conveying greetings from the Cuban Ambassador Mirta Granda, and recalled that the Cuban Revolution was built by young people.

The assault on the Moncada Barracks in 1953, the beginning of the last stage of the liberation movement, was commanded by Fidel Castro, who was only 26 years old, an action whose intellectual author was the Cuban national hero, José Martí, who was only 42 years old when he died in combat.

He spoke about particularities of the cruel U.S. blockade and thanked those attending this congress for their condemnation of such actions, while wishing them success in their efforts in the struggle for a better world, for the construction of which, he said, “we need young people like you”.

Marco Papacci, president of the National Association of Italy-Cuba Friendship (ANAIC), also gave remarkable words in the event and praised the fact that young Cubans live under the daily difficulties caused by the blockade and, in spite of everything, are cheerful, fighters, revolutionaries, educated, and today occupy many positions in the country.

The concluding statement expressed that “Cuba, the island example of virtue, after more than 60 years of the Revolution, continues to be for us a glorious example of struggle for justice, peace and freedom”.

It demands its “elimination of Cuba from the infamous states-sponsor-of-terrorism (SSOT) list”, a measure aimed at further stifling the Cuban economy.

We must put an end to this vile policy against Cuba, and it will be our mission to continue this battle in Italy.

Parlatino urges to celebrate Latin American and Caribbean unity

Panama City, Jun 22 (Prensa Latina) The Parlatino (Latin-American Parliament), based in Panama since 2006, celebrates on Saturday the Day of Latin American and Caribbean Unity, a dream of the Liberator Simón Bolívar that sought expression in the Amphictyonic Congress in 1826.

The unity of Latin America and the Caribbean is one of the essential purposes of the oldest legislative forum in the region, which in this 2024 celebrates 60 years of uninterrupted work in favor of objectives such as integration.

Parlatino had the initiative to celebrate every June 22 the Day of Latin American and Caribbean Unity in honor of the installation of the Amphictyonic Congress of Panama, a project approved at the XII Ordinary Assembly held in the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina, from August 23 to 27, 1988.

US NGO demand Cuba’s exclusion from Washington’s SSOT list

Washington, Jun 19 (Prensa Latina) Non-governmental and solidarity organizations in the United States have reiterated their demand to exclude Cuba from the State Sponsors of Terrorism (SSOT) list, where it arbitrarily remains under the administration of President Joe Biden.

The Interreligious Foundation for Community Organization IFCO-Pastors for Peace, the Cuba Si New York/New Jersey Coalition, and the December 12th Movement agreed in recent public statements on the harm caused to the Cuban people by such a designation amid a tightened US blockade.

They also agreed that the US Government has no moral or legal capacity to include Cuba on its false list when the Caribbean nation has been a victim of direct and indirect terrorist attacks by violent individuals based or trained in that northern country for decades.

The US Department of State announced on May 15 that Cuba was not included in its 2023 report of “countries that do not fully cooperate in the fight against terrorism,” IFCO recalled, and stated that the document was sent to the federal Congress.

Solidarity news channel on Cuban reality launched in Italy

Rome, Jun 19 (Prensa Latina) The Italy for Cuba information channel, a new initiative of an organization in solidarity with that country, is a new platform from Rome to fight against the hostile media campaigns and disclose that country’s reality.

The Italy-Cuba Friendship Association (ANAIC) launched “Episode 0” of this new project on social media and YouTube a few hours ago, in which communicators Luigi Basile, Walter Persello, and Anika Persiani participated.

Persiani, a member of the ANAIC Circle in Florence, stated in this first broadcast that the project aims to publicize Cuba’s stances on essential issues such as health, education, science, and the environment, among many others, which are also of interest to Italy.

It will also address current issues affecting Cuba, such as the impact of the US economic, commercial, and financial blockade on energy supplies, the availability of imported products, and the complexity of satisfying the population’s needs following the tightening of those measures.

Cuban and Italian jurists will be invited to talk about the Constitution approved in that country in 2019 and the new Family Code, among other issues that illustrate the deep humanism of the Cuban Revolution since its triumph in January 1959, the activist expressed.

ANAIC President Marco Papacci highlighted the importance of this new channel as “disinformation is currently one of the worst weapons, not only against this nation but also against many others that today seek a different path.”
