UN: Cuba’s behavior contradicts its inclusion in US terrorist list

United Nations, Jun 28 (Prensa Latina) UN Secretary General António Guterres today appreciated Cuba’s efforts in mediation processes by considering contradictory its permanence on the US list of nations that allegedly sponsor terrorism.

“That is not the kind of behavior one would expect from countries accused of being sponsors of terrorism,” Guterres’ spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, answered to a question from Prensa Latina.

The spokesman praised the Caribbean nation’s work in mediation processes, particularly its efforts for peace in Colombia.

Cuba hosted important negotiations for the Peace Agreements reached in 2016 and the ongoing talks between the National Liberation Army and the government of Gustavo Petro.

Its continuity on that US State Department list is considered unfair by governments and groups even within the United States.

In a recent joint statement, the Non-Aligned Movement and the Group of 77 and China demanded its removal from such list, which serves as a pretext to impose additional unilateral coercive measures against the island.

Both multinational groupings called for compliance with the 31 resolutions adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on the need to put an end to the blockade against Cuba and rejected the impact of that policy on Cubans.

At the end of May, the State Department confirmed it had removed Cuba from the list of countries which, according to Washington, do not fully cooperate in the fight against terrorism.

However, both the international community and the Cuban government consider the provision insufficient, which is not equivalent to the elimination of the list of countries sponsoring terrorism, which implies greater limitations for the economic and commercial exchange.

“The United States should do what is right and consistent with that position: remove Cuba from the State Department’s arbitrary list and put an end to the coercive economic measures that accompany it,” President Miguel Díaz-Canel reacted to the announcement.

Cuba was first included on the State Department’s list of sponsors of terrorism during the administration of President Ronald Reagan in 1982.

In 2015, then President Barack Obama considered that designation to be without merit in the case of the island and removed it.

Four years later, Donald Trump reinstated it a few days before leaving the White House, something that his Democratic successor, Joe Biden, has kept.

Cuba advocates for unity of peoples at Celac forum

Tegucigalpa, June 27 (Prensa Latina) Cuba insisted today on the importance of strengthening the unity of the people of the region and the leftist and progressive forces, during the II social forum of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States.

The head of the Department of International Relations of the Communist Party of Cuba, Emilio Lozada, stressed at the event that “the only thing that defeats imperialism is unity” and urged support for leftist processes internally and externally.

“We do not conceive that countries with progressive governments attack other countries with progressive governments, that is also the way to help imperialism, carry out a campaign of domination against our own people,” he warned.

Lozada called for the coordination of all progressive forces and leftist organizations in the world and recalled the fundamental role that unity played in defeating coups d’état in the region.

He pointed out that within a month an important battle will be fought on the continent, with the Venezuelan presidential elections.

Argentine organization condemns inclusion of Cuba in US report

Buenos Aires, Jun 28 (Prensa Latina) The Union of Cuban Residents in Argentina (URCA) joined the voices that condemn the arbitrary inclusion of Cuba in a report on human trafficking published by the US State Department.

The organization said in a statement that the decision to keep Cuba in the report “is one more way to punish the Cuban people and government for not bowing to imperial designs.” “They use contradictory and not credible arguments to distort and defame the work of Cuban medical collaboration for decades, in more than a hundred countries,” the URCA dispatch says.

“The United States government knows very well that Cuba restored health, saved lives, and restored vision to millions of people around the world. The truth that Washington hides is that this list, like all the others, has a marked political objective,” the organization adds.

The URCA also considers that these reports “only demonstrate the frustrations of the empire in not being able to surrender the Cuban people, even with the most genocidal, anti-human, and cruel policies used to date.”

The URCA went on to speak out against the economic, commercial, and financial war that the United States government is waging against Cuba. “Since January 1st, 1959, Cuba freed itself from the chains that tied it to imperial power and, as a free and sovereign country, it has the right to choose its own destiny,” the statement indicates.

Cuba recalls declaration of non-revocable socialism

Havana, Jun 26 (Prensa Latina) The National Assembly of Cuba (ANPP) on Wednesday recalled on X the 22nd anniversary of the declaration of the irrevocable socialism, after a referendum supported by more than eight million people.

On X, the Secretary of Organization of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC), Roberto Morales, distinguished that in 2002, after a broad process of popular participation and the signature of millions of Cubans, the ANPP approved the Constitutional Reform Act that proclaimed the irrevocable socialism”.

Electors voted in favor of the socialist content of the Magna Carta, in response to the interferenceist protesters of the then president of the United States, George W. Bush (2001-2009).

Later, the ANPP members unanimously approved the inclusion of an article in the 1976 Constitution, declaring that Cuba would never return to capitalism.

The text clearly expressed the irrevocable nature of the prevailing political, economic and social system, as well as the prohibition to negotiate under pressure, coercion or threat of a foreign power.

After approving the agreement by the Cuban Parliament, the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, expressed that the purpose of this action was to preserve the fruits of the revolutionary work at a time when the unfeasibility of capitalism to solve the most pressing problems of Humanity was increasingly evident.

France and WFP supply Cuba with micronutrient powder for children

Havana, Jun 27 (Prensa Latina) France, the World Food Program (WFP) and health authorities are working on a comprehensive strategy for the supply of micronutrient powder (MNP) for children between six and 23 months of age, official sources informed.

Known as Chispitas para crecer, the MNP consists of mixtures of vitamins and minerals in powder designed for distribution to this population group, providing them with a balanced combination to strengthen their immune system.

At the delivery ceremony, in the ninth medical office of the Cosme Ordoñez polyclinic in Havana, French Ambassador to Cuba Laurent Burin des Roziers praised the initiative and recalled that both nations have a long tradition of friendship. We must continue to show solidarity at difficult times and this donation is an example of that, he added.

In April 2023, France made a donation of 750,000 euros to WFP Cuba, 207,000 of which were used to purchase this supplement.

All 10,776 metric tons of MNP will benefit 44,608 children and will be distributed until 2025 in all Cuban provinces, except for the five eastern provinces, where the product arrived in 2008.

The sources specified that the planned delivery cycle, which is carried out through the family doctor’s offices, contemplates two months of supplementation and four months of rest to restart another cycle.

The use of MNP has an impact on children’s health when it is administered in the first 1,000 days of life, because it favors the development of the brain and body, and reduces the risk of iron deficiency and anemia in infants and young children.
