Statement by the Cuban Delegation attending Paris 2024

Paris, August 11 (Radio Habana Cuba) — The delegation representing Cuba at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games has declared its satisfaction for having competed with dignity and adherence to our values, inspired by the legacy of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro and the commitment to give everything in each outing, although the results did not always leave the desired results.

DECLARATION BY THE CUBAN DELEGATION ATTENDING PARIS 2024

. The delegation that represented Cuba at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games returns to our Homeland with the satisfaction of having competed with dignity and adherence to the values of our sport, inspired by the legacy of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro and the commitment to give everything in each outing, even if the results did not always leave the desired results.

. It does so, moreover, grateful for the many expressions of support received from the Island, where the people to whom we owe ourselves followed with interest what happened during these intense and very demanding days, with the main leaders of the Revolution aware of every detail.

. In this regard, we are honored to highlight the congratulatory message issued by Army General Raúl Castro Ruz on the occasion of the coronation of our standard-bearer Mijaín López, and the telephone conversations held by the First Secretary of the Party and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, with the fighter himself and other main protagonists of what happened here, where the attention of our diplomatic mission was also key and the Casa Yo Soy Cuba in Tremblay-en-France became an open space for the truth of our country.

. We were also aware of the statements of many other comrades, to which were added innumerable expressions of support, arriving by different means and also from other countries, always marked by affection and respect towards those who turned them into additional motivations for the battle, taken on by 61 athletes from 16 sports.

. With presence in 53 of the 329 events called, the conquest of two gold medals, one silver and six bronze placed Cuba in 32nd place among countries, which meant not fulfilling the goal of a place among the first 20, but even though more careful analysis remains, it is necessary to confirm that there was no triumphalism in that aspiration.

. As we have stated in different spaces, we assumed it aware that making it a reality would demand the almost perfect response of our main candidates to be crowned, and the fact that only one of them was left without a medal demonstrates the value of the studies from which it emerged.

. In this regard, it is worth mentioning that, even though this is a lower number than the 69 achieved for Tokyo 2020, having 61 qualified now was once again a meritorious achievement for a country without the possibilities of the great powers and impacted by the intensification of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States government.

. This multiplies the significance of the dedication with which athletes and coaches overcame limitations to make the most of their preparation, backed by the political will associated with the role assigned to sport in our country, the multiplication of alliances in the field of science and innovation, and the contribution of supportive friends who guaranteed important stays in several French locations.

. Likewise, without closing any doors to the qualification process, work was carried out in a differentiated manner at the level of sports and strategic figures, in accordance with the available resources, and medical-psychological care, anti-doping control and the study of opponents were consolidated, also supported by the reality experienced in these days.

. Our delegation, made up entirely of exponents of the Cuban sports system, maintained ethical behavior, adjusted to fair play, discipline, respect for opponents and the spirit of fraternal exchange, and received stimulating displays of sympathy in all the scenarios, something that we appreciate with healthy pride, motivated by the international prestige of the Revolution.

. As for results, logical and well-deserved applause for the great Mijaín, a fighter of the classic style who allowed us to share a unique moment with his arrival at five titles in these scenarios.

. We applauded the young boxer Erislandy Álvarez, who had an exciting gold debut, as well as the rest of the medalists, meaning that Yusneylis Guzmán (silver) and Yarisleidis Cirilo (bronze) debuted on the podium for our wrestlers and canoeists, respectively.

. Arlen López (bronze) became the second boxer from the Island with medals in three divisions, Luis Alberto Orta (bronze) set the number of fighters with more than one medal at this level at four, Rafael Alba (bronze) went down in the books as our first double Olympic medalist taekwondo player and Gabriel Rosillo (bronze) and Milaimy Marín (bronze) completed the decisive contribution of the fights, with the latter expanding the role of women, who in general totaled three podium finishes.

. Our recognition to those who did not form part of that vanguard, but were up to the expected level, even with historic personal performances. And to undisputed glories such as judoka Idalys Ortiz and boxer Julio César La Cruz, now dismissed without medals.

. We are also accompanied by the dissatisfaction generated by performances below expectations, beyond the failure to obtain medals, particularly in sports with figures capable of achieving them.

. We bid farewell to an extremely demanding event, confirming phenomena such as nationalizations based on results, arbitration inconsistencies and performances forged under the protection of material and human resources outside the countries of origin of its protagonists, a context in which Cuba, blockaded, attacked and slandered, without a single imported athlete or coach in its ranks, once again led Central America and the Caribbean, was fourth in the Americas and wrote pages unknown to many developed countries.

. That is why, just hours before the 98th anniversary of his birth, we recall with special affection Fidel, creator and promoter of a sports system accessible to all, we reiterate the praise for our athletes and we assume disagreements and weaknesses from what means the commitment to know that we are continuing his work.

Fidel lives in the ability of culture to save humanity

By Hilda Lidia Heredia

Nueva Gerona, August 12 (Radio Habana Cuba) — Constant and willing Huberto Llamas, one of the greatest theater artists of Cuba and America is in his homeland, Havana.

A bohemian and philanthropic man, he has been traveling around the Continent for several years, living between Mexico and Panama.

The doctor Honoris Causa, National Hero of Labor and multi-awarded national and international Master of the Americas, remembers and exalts the humanistic vision of Fidel Castro:

“He was passionate about culture and community art. He was a patron. A hypersensitive being. In our dialogues we reflected on the transformative work of art, a school of virtues for children and young people.

“Fidel Castro was and is a vital, intelligent, analytical, observant man. His hands and gestures drew his strong philosophical thought for art, profound and defining phrases of the action of community culture, he gave us advice and I was lucky to have him at my side in the first moments of my artistic career.

Remembering and honoring Fidel on his 98th birthday is to confess that his imprint accompanies me.    Fidel Castro lives in the capacity of culture to save humanity.

Our Cuban flag arrives today in the Homeland, wrapped in the invincible arms of Mijaín

Havana, August 12 (Radio Habana Cuba) — There are rarely such clear images of the differences between the rich and poor worlds as those seen at the Olympic Games.

If you look at the medal table from Paris-2024, or any other of the previous events, and look at the first pavilions, you will notice that it looks more like a meeting of the G20 or one of the rich nations that make up the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

That is why the first gold medals in their history from Saint Lucia, Dominica and Guatemala are so valuable, even though they came 124 years after the start of these Games.

The three Brazilian titles, the two Cuban ones, the one from Ecuador, the one from Chile, the ones obtained by African countries, the four silver medals from Mexico or the Colombian laurels are worth a lot.  They make us from the South sit in that luxurious room, even though we are denied the business and technological development of the sport of the great powers.

And they are worth more, because the Paris Olympics were very competitive, with 63 flags at the top of the award poles, at least once, and with 91 countries that registered on the list of medals.

They are also reasons to honor today, in the Homeland, our athletes – medalists or not – who will bring, in the invincible arms of Mijaín López Núñez, the flag of the solitary star that they defended with such fervor and love.  (Source: Granma)

Cuba reaffirms its commitment to the elimination of nuclear weapons

Havana, Aug. 9 (Radio Habana Cuba) Cuba will continue to work for the total, transparent, irreversible and verifiable elimination of nuclear weapons, Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez said today on the social network X.

In Hiroshima, approximately 66,000 people died at the moment of explosion, while in Nagasaki, 70,000 died at the moment of explosion; but in both cases, hundreds of thousands of inhabitants (mostly women and children) died later as a result of radiation. (Source: PL)

Cuba’s Foreign Ministry denies fabricated reports about participation in Venezuelan elections

August 10 (Radio Habana Cuba) Statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cuba

It is absolutely false that specialists in computer science or other areas have traveled from Cuba to Venezuela, with the purpose of modifying the results of the presidential elections in that country.

This unfounded and fabricated accusation by former Colombian senior official Francisco Santos is not accompanied by evidence, because it does not exist.

The promoter of this lie is known for his active participation in misrepresentation campaigns and for his involvement in various political scandals.  In December 2021, he invented the false story that the commander of a Colombian armed guerrilla group, Iván Márquez, was in Cuba, which was roundly denied by reality.

The politically motivated construction of a matrix of lies that attributes responsibility to Cuba for the results achieved by the contenders in the elections in Venezuela is assumed as a truth by those who traditionally participate in misrepresentation campaigns about Cuba.

“I am more than satisfied with the race I did. Here I achieved my personal best and that shows that I gave it my all,” said Cirilo, the Cuban canoeist from Guantanamo.

“Slender and with an unmatched brown skin color, this young woman never imagined that canoeing would be the love of her life, having been born in a small town devoid of rivers. Today, at just 22 years old, the Guantanamera native confirmed herself in the world elite,” journalist Oscar Figueredo said.

“Moments before the competition, she was seen getting out and securing the boat, looking at the distance she would cover in just a few minutes… In lane five, the bow rose and a powerful stroke led her to come in third with 44:36 seconds,” he narrated.

Cuba thus achieved its seventh Olympic medal in the Paris games with the effort made by Cirilo in the nautical stadium of Vaires-sur-Marne. So far, this Caribbean nation has achieved two gold medals, one silver, and four bronze medals.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, Aug. 9, 2024. Photo: teleSUR

The Court ordered all former presidential candidates to submit any documents they have regarding the July 28 election.

August 9 (teleSUR) On Friday, President Nicolas Maduro went to the Supreme Justice Court’s Electoral Chamber to present 100 percent of the minutes of the July 28 elections that his organization, the Great Patriotic Pole, has managed to compile

This happens in the context of the appearances of former presidential candidates and representatives of political organizations ordered by the Supreme Court for the purpose of an exhaustive investigation of the presidential elections held on July 28.

The Bolivarian leader arrived accompanied by the first lady Cilia Flores, the Venezuelan vice president Delcy Rodriguez, and other high-level officials.

In the vicinity of the Court’s headquarters in Caracas, hundreds of workers, students and social activists were waiting for President Maduro, who was cheered as he passed.

A few minutes earlier, the vice president of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), Diosdado Cabello, and other representatives of the Great Patriotic Pole also entered the Electoral Chamber.

Last week, the Venezuelan president formally asked the Supreme Court to conduct thorough investigations into the 2024 elections to dispel the narratives of alleged fraud that the Venezuelan far right opposition and its international allies have been spreading.

In addition to Nicolas Maduro, the Judges subpoenaed nine former presidential candidates: Luis Martinez, Daniel Ceballos, Antonio Ecarri, Benjamin Rausseo, Enrique Marquez, Jose Brito, Javier Bertucci, Claudio Fermin, and Edmundo Gonzalez.

Despite being required to appear before the authority, far-right politician Gonzalez did not attend the Electoral Chamber on Wednesday. The representatives of the political parties supporting him also did not submit any records or evidence of the alleged electoral fraud or of his supposed victory.

Favorable collaborative research on tropical infections

By Roberto Morejón

August 7 (Radio Habana Cuba) As every summer, the Cuban health services remain on alert for the presence of arboviruses, a group of diseases caused by viruses transmitted to humans by insects and arachnids.

With the increase in rains and sweltering temperatures of the period, the largest of the Antilles maintains the usual vigilance for yellow fever, present in other latitudes, Zika, chinkungunya as well as dengue and the disease caused by the Oropouche virus, the most recent to appear in the country.

Since the beginning of the summer season, more cases of fever have been detected in this Caribbean country.

The situation has also been affected by material limitations due to the US blockade and its determination to place Cuba on a list of countries that the United States considers sponsors of terrorism.

Cuba has not been able to count on sufficient supplies to sustain a community fumigation campaign as usual.

In the face of Oropouche and Dengue fever, experts have increased public information on the causes and symptoms of these diseases, the treatments to be followed, and the importance of patients suffering from these diseases going to the doctor.

In that context, the Cubans welcomed the arrival in Havana of specialists from Russia’s Federal Service for Supervision of Consumer Protection and Welfare, or Rospotrebnadzor, with the aim of updating their knowledge on tropical infections.

Together with their Cuban colleagues, the experts are already carrying out studies on diseases currently recorded in the Caribbean region.

This way, another aspect of the cooperation between Cuba and Russia is manifested in the field of health, this time based on the use of high-tech testing systems by the visitors.

The Eurasian nation helped the largest of the Antilles in the most difficult moments of the Covid-19 pandemic, when the medical oxygen plant broke down, worsening the health situation.

Now, the World Health Organization has called on countries affected by the Oropouche virus to intensify surveillance to curb the spread.

Even in the midst of material shortages, with a low rate of technical availability of waste collection vehicles, prevention and control rules are being reinforced in the Caribbean archipelago, such as the elimination of insect breeding sites and the education of the population on procedures to avoid bites.
