Mexican President defends sovereignty of Venezuelan people

Mexico City, Jan 10 (Prensa Latina) Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced today that the ambassador to Venezuela will be present during the inauguration of President Nicolás Maduro and reiterated that the South American nation is sovereign.

“In the case of Venezuela, the Venezuelan ambassador will go, he will represent us there. (…) We defend our foreign policy, the sovereignty of the Venezuelan people. They are the ones who have to decide,” the president emphasized in her usual meeting with journalists.

“There should be no intervention in any way, but the people of Venezuela should decide,” stressed the dignitary, specifying that it is not just a personal opinion, because “as president, that is the foreign policy of our country.”

When asked about a supposed rearrangement of political forces in Latin America and a shift of the left, the head of the Executive considered that progressives in the region have a lot of strength and recognition.

“The Frente Amplio has just won in Uruguay and that is a sign that in a country where progressive forces did not govern, this force has just won,” he argued.

Maduro was sworn in as president of Venezuela for the 2025-2031 six-year term on Friday.
