Cuban President thanks US congressmen for visit

Havana, July 15 (Prensa Latina) Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel today expressed his gratitude for the recent visit of US congressmen and the opportunity they had to witness firsthand the consequences of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by Washington.

The First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba also highlighted on his X account that in the meeting with Mark Pocan, Maxine Dexter, Teresa Leger and Delia Ramírez, they discussed the serious damage and humanitarian impact on the Cuban people of this policy, which has intensified to extreme levels, the energy blockade and the secondary sanctions.

A delegation from the United States House of Representatives visited the island between July 9 and 13 and was able to verify in their exchanges firsthand the severe collective punishment to which the US government subjects the people of the Caribbean nation.

“They have witnessed the inhumane impact of the genocidal policy designed in South Florida and implemented by the Secretary of State. As they themselves acknowledge, #CubaIsNotAThreat, the blockade is,” Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez posted on his Twitter account.

The Foreign Minister also released a statement signed by the legislators outlining the harm caused by the intensification of the policy of harassment. They concluded that the fuel blockade imposed by the United States “is causing indiscriminate suffering to the most vulnerable Cubans, contributing to nationwide power outages, garbage piling up on street corners, and severe shortages of food, medicine, and public transportation.”

They stated that the Donald Trump administration has not presented evidence that the island represents an imminent threat to the national security of the United States.

Furthermore, they considered that any pretext used to undertake an illegal, unauthorized, and unpopular military operation against the island would aggravate a serious humanitarian catastrophe, expose members of the U.S. armed forces to risks, and harm precisely those people they claim to support.

They urged President Trump and other members of Congress to listen to the majority of American and Cuban citizens, as well as the rest of the world, and lift “the cruel sanctions that weigh on the Cuban people and begin serious and comprehensive negotiations with the Cuban authorities.”
