Venezuela Rejects Colombia’s NATO Membership

Caracas, May 27 (Prensa Latina) Venezuela has rejected the announcement made by Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos on his country”s membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), in the category of a global member.

According to a communiqué issued by the Foreign Ministry, the Venezuelan government denounced ‘before the international community the intention by Colombian authorities to go along with the introduction in Latin America and the Caribbean of an external military alliance with nuclear capability.’

The text stated that Bogota’s position ‘poses a serious threat to regional peace and stability, based on the defense of interests alien to the welfare of our sovereign peoples.’

Venezuelan authorities recalled the historic position of Latin America and the Caribbean ‘by taking due distance from NATO’s warmongering policies and actions and any other military organization that seeks to appeal to the use of force,’ to impose hegemony of a particular political and economic model.
