Lima, Apr 12 (Prensa Latina) Members of Cuban and Venezuelan civil society today interrupted a meeting with high-level representatives of the governments participating in the 8th Summit of the Americas, in protest against the ”anti-democratic format” of the meeting.
To the cry of ‘mercenaries’, and ‘Don’t mess with Cuba, Cuba is respected’, both delegations rejected the presence in this forum of people of Cuban origin who do not represent the civil society of the Caribbean island.
The angry protest was also targeted against the secretary general of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, whose opening speech was interrupted by the accusations of ‘liar’ the audience shouted.
The methodology applied by the organizers of the continental Summit to decide spokespersons and participants in that meeting has generated doubts and strong complaints from many delegations, considering that they resort to cunning tricks to privilege some speakers over others.
This Thursday’s dialogue seeks high-level officials to listen and receive recommendations, demands and denunciations from the 28 civil society coalitions, each with a central theme derived from the three generals addressed by the summit: democratic governance and corruption, and corruption and sustainable development.
The third focal point refers to aspects of cooperation, international institutions and public-private partnerships, but it is expected that issues such as migration, poverty, social exclusion, violence and others will be added.
Besides the meeting of Foreign Affairs Ministers of the American states, which will be chaired by Peruvian Foreign Minister Néstor Popolizio, this Thursday will continue the 5th Youth Forum of the Americas and the Third Business Summit of the hemisphere, both spaces with Cuban participation.
Discussions in the Congress of the Republic of the Third Meeting of the Open Parliament Network of ParAméricas and, from an alternative perspective excels, the continuation of the 11th Summit of the Peoples, which has been a tribune of innumerable expressions of solidarity.
The inauguration of the 8th Summit of the Americas is scheduled for tomorrow Friday in this capital.
