EU Supports Resumption of Talks in Cuba between Colombian Gov’t and ELN

Brussels, May 6 (Prensa Latina) The European Union (EU) expressed today in a statement its support for the resumption of peace talks between the Government of Colombia and the National Liberation Army (ELN), which will be held in Cuba.

Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, said in the statement issued today that EU appreciates Cuban Government’s willingness to host in Havana the fifth round of talks between the Colombian Government and ELN.

Mogherini also said that the EU would like the parties to work successfully towards a ceasefire, which would significantly improve the humanitarian situation in the areas most damaged by the conflict.

Spokesperson for EU foreign affairs and security policy Maja Kocijancic said when referring to the EU stance that the resumption of the fifth round of peace talks between the Government of Colombia and the ELN in Cuba is a positive step towards peace.

She also said that EU is ready to help as much as possible to ensure that this peace process is lasting and sustainable.

Peace negotiations between the Government of President Juan Manuel Santos and ELN started in February 2017 and were held in Ecuador until April 18, when the country’s president Lenin Moreno said that Ecuador would no longer continue as guarantor and host of the talks.
