Cuban Parliament Activates Friendship Groups With 93 Countries

Havana, Jun 2 (Prensa Latina) Cuban Popular Power National Assembly (Parliament) approved unanimously the creation of friendship groups with 93 countries of the world Saturday.

In an extraordinary session of the Cuban Parliament (the first made by the 9th Legislature) its president Esteban Lazo said these groups are formed by 179 deputies.

‘This is a very valuable complement for the work of the International Affairs Commission, a work that will allow the exchange with other groups, to spread Cuban reality over the world, to fight the campaigns against Cuba and defend the foreign policy of Cuba and its principles,’ said Lazo in his intervention.

According to Lazo, for the creation of the parliamentary friendship groups, the experiences of previous legislatures were taken into account, as well as the international practice.

The session also had on the agenda the approval of the 10 permanent work committees of the 9th Legislature, which was installed on April 18 for the 2018-2023 five-year period or quinquennium, and the constitutional reform process, for which a temporary committee was created.

The Cuban deputies began the day with a minute of silence in homage to the 112 fatal victims (101 Cubans and 11 foreigners) of the air disaster on May 18, when a Boeing 737-200 leased by Cubana de Aviación crashed shortly after takeoff from the José Martí International Airport, in this capital.

In the session, there were 572 of the 605 deputies elected on March 11 this year, appointment at the polls in which seven million 400 thousand people participated, about 86 percent of the registered voters.
