Cuban Lawmakers Analyze Draft of New Constitution

Havana, Jul 20 (Prensa Latina) Cuban lawmakers continue today, gathered in three groups, the analysis of the Draft of the Constitution, after two days of individual study of the document in the 10 permanent working commissions of the National Assembly of People”s Power.

The legislators will unravel their doubts with members of the temporary commission in charge of the Constitutional Reform and a group of advisors, according to a note published on the website of the legislative body.

The meetings will continue deepening the knowledge of the draft to be debated during the regular session starting Saturday, the text says.

It is expected that the draft will be admitted in this First Ordinary Period of Sessions of the Ninth Legislature of the National Assembly of People’s Power, and then will be submitted to popular consultation, facing the call for referendum for approval or not by the island’s inhabitants.

A 33-lawmaker commission -led by First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party, Raul Castro- was established on June 2, during the first special session of the Ninth Legislature of the National Assembly, to draw up the document.

The new Constitution consists of a preamble and 224 articles, divided into 11 titles, 24 chapters and 16 sections, and maintains the political foundations of the socialist and revolutionary State, in line with what Raul Castro and the country’s President, Miguel Diaz-Canel, done in advanced.

It includes the promotion of sustainable development, the search for equity, respect and attention to the people by the State’s institutions and their representatives at several levels, attached to International Law, rejection to terrorism and nuclear weapons, and the fight against climate change.
