Sancti Spíritus, May 19 (Prensa Latina) More than 70 percent of bee honey for pharmaceutical products and export are processed annually by the country’s main Processing Plant, located in this central Cuban province, experts said today.

Alberto Bravo, director of the industry, told the press the campaign is progressing successfully with more than 1,300 tons delivered to international customers.

European countries are the main importers, with estimates by 6,000 tons annually, followed by other Asian and Latin American nations, he remarked.

Honeys, Bravo pointed out, have the quality standard for shipping, with very favorable humidity parameters, an indicator demanded by the foreign market.

It also provides high quality products to the country’s Pharmaceutical and Optical Industry, the Director added.

At present, Processing and Export Plant receives honey from the western province of Pinar del Río to Camagüey, including the special municipality of Isla de la Juventud.

Bravo highlighted bee honey is one of the economic items with a safe market, unique with dual use: food and medicine.

At present, Bravo stressed, organic honeys are being processing, mainly from beekeepers in Pinar Del Río, highly valued and prized for being free of chemical insecticides and antibiotics.

Sancti Spíritus will join the organic molasses production with the certification of about 500 honeycombs.

This year, a new processing plant will be put into operation in the western part of the country and another one in the eastern to compensate the national production.

On the other hand, the Spirituana institution will continue processing honey from the provinces of Villa Clara, Cienfuegos, Sancti Spíritus, Ciego de Ávila and Camagüey.
