Havana, May 4 (Prensa Latina) A representation of theater artists, playwrights and directors from eight countries will arrive here to participate in the 10th Festival of Latin American and Caribbean Theater ”Mayo Teatral”, organizers said today.
The festival, to be held from May 11th to 20th, will stage appealing plays from Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Martinique, Mexico and Puerto Rico, the latter as special guest and recognized for its artistic work after the onslaught by Hurricane Maria.
Vivian Martinez Tabares, general director of the event, said that Puerto Rico’s stage will be praised during the festival, as this country strengthened the social and humanistic role of theater to benefit the people after the hurricane.
Martinez Tabares confirmed the presence of the Puerto Rican group Tojunto, directed by Rosa Luisa Marques, jury member of the Casa de las Americas award and an outstanding activist in the promotion of culture to the most humble sectors.
The group will stage ‘Hijas de la Bernarda’, an appealing play inspired by ‘La Casa de Bernanda Alba’, mixing theater with music, flamenco dance with experimental dance, while reaffirming Puerto Rican identity at a time of serious crisis.
Another foreign play included in the program is ‘Mutis’, a solo performance with texts written by William Shakespeare and performed by Argentinean-Spanish group Hernan Gene, named after director of the group and recognized in Cuba for a clown play that fascinated the audience in the 90s.
