Work of Mozart Brings Together Prominent Musicians in Cuba

Havana, Oct 25 (Prensa Latina) The music of the Austrian Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart gathers on Thursday in Cuba scholars and interpreters, national and foreign, of the work of one of the most influential geniuses in all the arts.

The fourth Mozart Havana Festival brings together musicians from Russia, Austria, Germany, Australia, the United States, the Netherlands and Cuba, from October 25 to 28, around the creation of one of the most versatile and prolific composers of history.

During the four days of the event the audience will enjoy varied melodies in styles, formats and the work of composers that for the occasion will be focused on chamber music rather than on concerts of large orchestral layouts.

Among other pieces of the Genius of Salzburg to be played at the Mozart Havana Festival will be the Vienese Quartet, Te Deum in Do, symphonies No. 30 and Concertante for violin and piano, the Serenade No. 12 for winds, and String Quintets No. 3 and 4.

Russian composer Modest Musórgsky and French Alexandre Ryd will add brilliance to the event.

The opening gala on Thursday night, at the classical Marti Theater, already sets the bar high by proposing an eclectic program that, in two parts, shows the creative ingenuity of composers Terry Riley, Louis Andriessen, Amadeo Roldan and Igor Stravinsky.

The main venues of the festival will be the Oratorio San Felipe Neri, the Marti Theater, the Minor Basilica of St. Francis of Assis, and the Cervantes Hall, all located in the historical district of Old Havana. The event will also celebrate the centenary of the remarkable Cuban composer Alfredo Diez Nieto with the world premiere of his String Quartet No. 2.

Diez Nieto, still active, is considered the dean of authors of concert music on the island, with several written symphonies and scores for other orchestral formats.

For his work, the Ministry of Culture awarded him with the National Music Prize in 2004.
