Venezuela: 300,000 Women Register for New Childbirth Plan

As many as 300,000 women have registered for Venezuela

The program, hailed as “revolutionizing,” was launched by the Ministry for Women and Gender Equality and seeks to fulfill the demands of the humanized birthing bill.

Jan 26 (teleSUR) As many as 300,000 women have registered for Venezuela’s Humanized Childbirth Plan, launched last year in response to demands from women’s organizations, according to President Nicolas Maduro.

Maduro made the announcement at an assembly of women in Caracas’ Plaza Bolivar. The program, hailed as “revolutionizing,” was launched by the Ministry for Women and Gender Equality and seeks to fulfill the demands of the humanized birthing bill proposed two years ago.

The plan includes the construction of pre-birthing centers; shelters for pregnant women living in extreme poverty; community outreach, and training for medical professionals and public officials.

It also includes training thousands of community activists as “doulas” (midwives), who have now reached the plan’s community outreach stage.

In a statement posted on Twitter Friday, Maduro vowed to be “the president of the women. I declare myself a feminist. My hand doesn’t tremble and my ministers know it. I will ensure that not a single woman loses access to her rights, today and tomorrow.”
