Mexican Scholar Recognizes Achievements of Cuban University

Guantanamo, Cuba,Jun 4 ( Prensa Latina) The President of the Inter-University Commission for Social Service of Mexico, Susana Angelica Pastrana, acknowledged here today the achievements of the university socio-cultural project ”With Backpack on the shoulder” of Guantanamo University (UG).

The academician told Prensa Latina that despite only five years of existence, the project, created by university students from the easternmost Cuban province already has had tangible results in the communities where it is being implemented.

In 2016, this Cuban project won the International Social Work Award at the VII International Congress of Social Work held in Guaymas and San Carlos, Sonora, Mexico, in recognition of their community work on the island, Pastrana remarked.

The official visits the province of Guantanamo to participate in the IV University Scientific Workshop on the Management of Projects with Sociocultural Impact on Local Development, in which she will give the master lecture ‘Social Service as an indispensable complement in the integral formation of university students’.

On the other hand , Daniel Fernandez, coordinator of ‘With Backpack on His Shoulder’, explained to Prensa Latina that his main objective is to strengthen the link between the University and the community, while the students diagnose social problems and then interact in an integral way in the formation of civic-moral and patriotic values.

It is made up of students, professors and university collaborators who are willing to create, propose and work towards a better world, Fernandez stressed.

The UG develops several community work programs which allows students to interact with the environment and ensures the role of this house of science and progress as a manager and promoter of local development.
