Friendly U.S.-Cuba Baseball Game Confirmed

HAVANA, Cuba, May 9 (acn) The Cuban Baseball Federation (CBF) confirmed on Thursday the traditional game of the island’s team against the U.S. national university team on July 23-27.

In a press conference, Higinio Velez, president of the CBF said that there will be five games, scheduled for Havana’s Latin American Stadium.

The executive said that he will suggest the U.S. party the possibility of carrying out some of these games in the cities of Pinar del Rio and Matanzas, territories that witnessed the final games of the last season of the Cuban Baseball Championship.

A pre-selection of young baseball players with conditions to be part of the Cuba team to the 2017 World Classic, which will play the game against the United States under the direction of mentor Alfonso Urquiola of Pinar del Rio, champion of the last National Series, will soon be announced.

Bilateral games between the two baseball powers resumed in 2012 in Havana after a 16-year parenthesis, an occasion in which the Cuban team won three of the five games held.

However, the following year the U.S. team beat Cuba five times, in games held in several cities of the North American nation.
