Rome, Feb 7 (Prensa Latina) The stability of the project of collaboration of the International Fund for Agricultural Development in Cuba ls recognized by that body.
During the 7th meeting of the Global Farmers’ Forum taking place in the seat of that organ until next Tuesday, Prensa Latina spoke to Francisco Javier Pichon, manager of the programme of the Office for Mesoamerica and the Caribbean of the IFAD.
The oficial stated that Cuba is ‘one of the more stable (countries) in the Latin America region and the Caribbean’ in the IFAD Country Programme (Programme on National Strategic Opportunities).
He explained that the Fund has two other projects of collaboration with the Cuban government, in basic beans (corn and beans), cattle and a third ‘focused in chains of value of the coffee and cocoa.’
All of them are developing in the country’s Eastern region and are ‘put in practice through the cooperatives of small producers as protagonists of the programme.’
He also said that the first two projects ‘have an enormous stability’ and the Ministry of Agriculture is very committed to their implementation.
In another part of the interview Pichon assessed these programs as ‘very important’, since they ‘answer to products of the basic food basket’. He specified that ‘the strategic goal of the Cuban government of requesting IFAD’s support for these programs has been increasing production in these spheres in order to substitute imports.’
