Cuba Will Publish New Constitution that Will go to Referendum

Havana, Jan 7 (Prensa Latina) In the course of this week, Correos de Cuba will make available to the inhabitants of the island the Constitution of the Republic that will be submitted to a referendum on February 24, the National Assembly announced on Monday.

In a press release, the Parliament recalled that the substitute magna carta of the one in force since 1976 was approved on December 22 in the Assembly, during the second ordinary period of the IX Legislature.

The text will be available in the 15 provinces of the country in tabloid format of 16 pages, at the price of one peso, he said.

Cubans have already accessed the document through the media and the Internet, before an appointment at the polls for which more than eight million citizens are summoned.

The new Constitution is the result of a broad popular consultation, held from August 13 to November 15, with the participation of almost nine million people in 133 thousand meetings in neighborhoods and work and study centers.

About 780 thousand proposals came out of that process, including those issued by residents abroad, converted after analyzing and processing nine thousand 600 standard proposals, half of them incorporated into the constitution that will be submitted to a referendum.

The text ratifies the socialist character of Cuba and the leading role in its society of the Communist Party, and reflects changes in the structure of the State, the expansion of individual rights and guarantees, the strengthening of popular power in the base (the municipalities) and the recognition of various forms of property, including private property.

In recent days, leaders and personalities of the country, including President Miguel Diaz-Canel, have called to vote yes for the new Constitution, which will come into force as of its publication in the Official Gazette of the Republic.
