Cuba to Host Event on Latin Music Women

Havana, 11 Mar (Prensa Latina) With the objective of making visible the musical work of relevant artists inside and outside Cuba, the Meeting of Women Creators ”Angel and Habanera”, hosted by Cuban singer-songwriter Liuba Maria Hevia, opens Monday in Havana.

The event, dedicated to the 500th anniversary of the foundation of San Cristobal Village in Havana, includes concerts, tributes, exhibitions and an academic section, whose central axis will be the habaneras (instrumental vocal genre of urban origin defined by its melody of romantic lyrical character, with instrumental accompaniment).

Dominican performer Diomary, who is renowned for updating the sound roots of her native land and for her activism in defence of women’s rights, will be in charge of one of the main attractions of the event, the tribute to her fellow countrywoman Sonia Silvestre.

The meeting program also includes the screening of the documentary dedicated to Cuban singer Teresita Fernandez, produced and directed by Hevia, and the concert by Costa Rican singer-songwriter Maria Petriz.

The activities scheduled for the event will be held until March 17. The main venues are the Sala Villena of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba, Casa de las Americas and the National Museum of Fine Arts.

In the academic section, the lectures will be given by musicologist Nerys Bello and singer-songwriter Hevia, while the opening concert will feature performances by Cuban Enid Rosales, Annalie Lopez and Yeni Turiño accompanied by Diomary, also known as La Mala.

Costa Rican Petriz will close the Meeting of Women Creators ‘Angel and Habanera’ with a unique concert dedicated to women in music from different latitudes and with a special accent on the troubadour song.
