Cuba did not Create Current Situation with More Doctors, FM Warns

Havana, Dec 5 (Prensa Latina) The Ministry of Foreign Affairs warned on Wednesday that Cuba is not responsible for the current situation regarding Brazil’s More Doctors Program and the end of Cuban doctors’ participation in that initiative.

First of all, I would like to reiterate that Cuba did not generate the current situation. The decision made by our country to withdraw from the More Doctors Program was a painful but necessary decision, as it is a responsibility and a priority for Cuba to guarantee the physical integrity and safety of its collaborators,’ the official Yaira Jimenez said.

According to the Director of Communication and Image of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MINREX), Havana’s stance responds to the prevailing context in Brazil, characterized by uncertainty and the questionable professionalism of the elected government.

The irresponsible attitude and political manipulation of this issue encouraged by President-elect Jair Bolsonaro forced Cuba to make a decision that will likely have implications for millions of Brazilian families, especially for those low-income ones who live in the poorest areas, geographically isolated, in communities with fewer resources, she said on a Youtube channel activated by MINREX.

Jimenez expressed solidarity with the affected people on behalf of the Cuban government.

The current situation, which has created regrettable circumstances that make it impossible to continue Cuban cooperation in Brazil, is the exclusive responsibility of the Brazilian government, which will take office on January 1, she insisted.

The Cuban Ministry of Public Health announced on November 14 the decision to withdraw from the More Doctors Program, given Bolsonaro’s conditions and threats.

He announced his intention to force the doctors to revalidate their degree and grant individual contracts, ignoring the agreements reached between the governments of Cuba and Brazil, and the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO).
