Cuba Appoints New President of Its Olympic Committee

Havana, Oct 2 (Prensa Latina) Former gymnast Roberto Leon Richards will preside over the Cuban Olympic Committee (COC) after being elected by direct and secret vote in a special assembly of the institution, sports website JIT posted on Tuesday.

Richards, who was the vice president of the institution and awarded with the Olympic Merit Order, will occupy the position held since 1997 by Jose Ramon Fernandez, elected Honorary Life President of COC.

Participants in the event unanimously highlighted Fernandez’s brilliant career leading the organization.

His devotion, dedication, honesty and will stand as a legacy of a continuing example of the thought of the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, said Richards, who is also the president of the National Federation of Gymnastics, a sport in which he won Pan American and Central American titles.

The Assembly, which was attended by Commander Guillermo Garcia, head of the Cuban Horse Riding Federation, and the president of the National Sports Institute, Antonio Becali, ratified former track runner Alberto Juantorena as the vice-president of COC and elected Jose Manuel Pelaez as vice-president of the International Cycling Union.

Ruperto Herrera and Rafael Guerra were re-elected as Secretary General and Secretary of Records, in that order, and active athletes and retired sports glories such as wrestler Mijain Lopez, shooter Leuris Pupo, former hammer thrower Yipsi Moreno and former javelin thrower Maria Caridad Colon are part of the 13-member Executive.
