Copppal for Maintaining Unity of Progressive Forces in the Region

Cuba received the firm position of the Copppal condemning the economic, financial and commercial blockade that the United States has against the island, which has been aggravated by the administration of Donald Trump.

By Edilberto F. Méndez Amador   Santo Domingo, May 6 (Prensa Latina) The general coordination meeting of the Permanent Conference of Political Parties of Latin America and the Caribbean (Copppal), highlighted the urgent need for the region today to maintain the unity of the progressive forces.

Interviewed by Prensa Latina at that meeting in this capital, the deputy chief of the Department of International Relations of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, Jorge Arias, commented the main aspects discussed.

Arias, who represents Cuba in one of the Deputy Secretaries of the organization, pointed out how in the conclave there was clarity regarding the imposition of the integration of Latin American and Caribbean parties in defense of the Union of South American Nations and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States.

This consideration, he sayd, ‘confirms that we are actively participating in a progressive organization which defends the process of changes that have occurred in the last 20 years in Latin America and at the same time maintains its firm solidarity with the main causes of the region.’

He also noted that during the meeting, special interest received Venezuela. Copppal’s gave clear support to the elections to be held on May 20, and a mission of the organization was appointed to accompany the process.

Solidarity with Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva became a cardinal issue with the denounce of the measures taken against him, and the intention of Copppal, coordinated with the Sao Paulo Forum, to continue with the execution of actions of protest in demand of his release.

Arias explained that the meeting made also a statement in favor of dialogue and peace in Nicaragua and against any foreign interference in that country.

On the other hand, said that as has been traditional, Cuba received the firm position of the Copppal condemning the economic, financial and commercial blockade that the United States has against the island, which has been aggravated by the administration of Donald Trump.

In this sense, the meeting manifested ‘the infinite confidence in the continuity of the revolutionary process.’

The next appointment of the Conference will be in Panama from 12 to 14 October this year, hosting the same, the ‘Democratic Revolutionary Party, historical organization founded by Omar Torrijos’, he informed.
