Colombian Foreign Minister Travels to Havana for Dialogue With ELN

Bogota, Jun 13 (Prensa Latina) Colombian Foreign Minister Maria Angela Holguin and High Commissioner for Peace Rodrigo Rivera traveled to Cuba today to strengthen the negotiating team with the ELN.

The government delegation is seeking to accelerate the signing of agreements in the fifth round of dialogue, which ends on Friday.

The press in the capital has been told that the aim is to channel the signing of a new bilateral ceasefire before the second round of the presidential elections on June 17.

Besides, progress has been made in defining a framework agreement which will allow the next president of the country to conclude a final agreement ‘that will guarantee peace will be complete and irreversible’, official sources said.

For his part, the government’s chief negotiator in Havana, Gustavo Bell, stated on Wednesday from Havana that ‘every effort is being made to reach a bilateral ceasefire that will allow not only the development of the agenda items, but also the saving of lives’.

Colombia’s National Liberation Army (ELN) has declared a new unilateral ceasefire since last Monday in the context of the second round of the presidential elections.

We have decided to decree a new suspension of our military operations, from 0:00 on Friday June 15 to 24:00 on Tuesday 19 to facilitate the participation of Colombians in the elections, the guerrilla announced in its digital publication Voces.
