Brown University’s jazz band is visiting Cuba for a week of performances, jam sessions with local musicians and educational lectures.
The trip is sponsored by Brown’s Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies and the music department. Fourteen undergraduate musicians and one undergraduate filmmaker are making the trip along with the center’s director and the head of the jazz band.
The group left Monday and will return Sunday.
The students will perform at Casa de las Americas, the Cuban government’s premier research institution and the university’s principle partner on the Brown in Cuba program, and other locations. They will also attend lectures on Cuba’s economy and political system.
Brown got a special federal license for the visit.
The office of the president is providing funding.
