Artes de Cuba Takes US Capital in Grand Festival

Washington, May 8 (Prensa Latina) The festival ”Artes de Cuba: From the Island to the World”, which gathers about 400 artists from that nation, opens its doors today in the United States with a show featuring music figures.

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington DC is the space where the American public could enjoy until June 3 an important example of the Cuban rhythms, theater, dance, visual arts, design and cooking.

The Buena Vista Social Club Diva, Omara Portuondo, singer Aymee Nuviola, pianists Aldo Lopez-Gavilan and Jorge Luis Pacheco, saxophonist Yosvany Terry and guitarist Ali Arango will open the biggest event dedicated to the Cuban culture in the history of this country.

The opening show, which will take place at the Eisenhower Theater, with capacity for 1,100 people, will also include the performance of the Miguel Failde orchestra and the Mozart Lyceum of Havana orchestra.

The curator of the event and vice president of International Programming at the Kennedy Center, Alicia Adams, told Prensa Latina last week that the tickets for this opening performance had already been sold out.

According to the specialist, the event in which more than 200 artists from the island and others based outside the island will take part, will have a lot of energy and will appeal to a large sector of the American community.

Adams considered that the festival ‘will show the humanity and beauty of the Cuban art,’ and the wealth of the Caribbean island ‘in terms of its people and culture.’

Asked about her main recommendations for the festival, the curator mentioned the popular Los Van Van orchestra and the Lopez-Nussa family (Ernan, Harold, Ruy and Ruy Adrian), made up of talented musicians who will provide the ‘extraordinary opportunity to see them together on stage.’

The Cuban National Ballet will also be here, celebrating the 40th anniversary of the company’s premiere in the United States, said Adams, who considered very special the expected presence of Prima Ballerina Assoluta Alicia Alonso, director of the company.
