Havana, Dec 4 (Prensa Latina) The 9th Congress of Microbiology and Parasitology opened its doors here today with scientists from more than 150 nations, who will pay tribute to the eight decades of the Institute of Tropical Medicine Pedro Kouri (IPK), an institution dedicated to the study of infectious diseases.
Researchers from Brazil, Venezuela, Mexico, Ecuador, Colombia, El Salvador, Peru, and the United States are present at the meeting, which will run until Friday at Havana’s Conference Center, west of the capital.
From other latitudes, specialists from Italy, Spain, Belgium, France and Japan arrived to participate in the 6th National Congress of Tropical Medicine.
During the meeting, which will run until December 9, there will also be a Seminar on HIV/AIDS in Cuba as well as the International Symposium on Chromoblastomycosis.
In a press conference, the president of the Congress, Guadalupe Guzmán, explained that one of the objectives is to update and exchange on the role of microbiology and parasitology in the confrontation of high impact diseases such as infectious, emerging, and re-emerging and the forgotten ones.
Advances in the knowledge of infectious bacterial, mycotic, viral and parasitic diseases; its diagnosis, epidemiology, and pathology, as well as the situation in Cuba and in the world are among the main objectives, she said.
